There are some truly terrific playwrights that are active today. Some of these playwrights will be discussed here.
The Great British
Caryl Churchill is a British playwright who has focused much of her work on feminism and similar social issues. She has won numerous awards over the years and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2010 for her contributions. Her works often reflect themes of modern life, such as the stock market crash and the controversy of cloning. This is no doubt why her works are so popular and easy to relate to.
Another notable British playwright is Bola Agbaje, who although born in London, lived in Nigeria for many years. Her years in Nigeria helped influence her works. Her first play that premiered in 2007 won a prestigious award, the Laurence Olivier Award, and she is widely regarded as being a very talented playwright. Joe Penhall is another British playwright who has been very successful and won many awards including the Lawrence Olivier Award. His written work has been easily modified for movies and television series.
Dennis Kelly is a popular and internationally acclaimed playwright from Britain. His work is known for its’ intensity and darkness. His plays show strong character development and are popular throughout the world. Much of his work has been produced in other countries such as Germany, Austria, Iceland, Romania, Japan and the United States. He also writes for television and movies. Dennis Kelly has won several awards for his work including a Tony Award, a BAFTA and a Laurence Olivier Award. The fact that his work is so internationally appealing reflects how talented he truly is and how cross-cultural his plays are.
The Acclaimed Americans
An acclaimed American playwright is Sam Shepard, who has written at least 57 plays. Many of these plays have gone on to win awards, such as the Obie award. He even won a Pulitzer Prize for his play “Buried child”. His work focuses on life in small towns found in the American West. The plays explore such themes as life in a dysfunctional family, or themes of loss and love. His work combines honesty and drama with comedy. This extremely talented playwright even acts in movies.
Another American playwright of note is Audrey Cefaly. She is from Alabama and the gulf region of the United States; thus, she is considered a southern playwright who creates stories about working-class people. Hailing from Boston is the American playwright Annie Baker. She won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, for her play “The Flick”. Her work focuses on the challenges that everyday people face in small towns. She is respected among other playwrights and was named a 2017 MacArthur Fellow. Thus, she will receive funds of $625,000 over the next five years as part of this fellowship.
Creating a play is a challenging endeavor and these playwrights we have discussed are a few of the most talented and successful individuals that are still working today, and whose work reflects a high standard and an ability to appeal to wide audiences.
